9th & 10th Grade College Checklist

9th Grade

  • Take challenging classes in core academic subjects
  • Sign up to take the PSAT in October for practice
  • Get to know your HS Counselor
  • Create a four-year academic plan with HS counselor and parent/guardian
  • Join and/or create clubs/extra-curricular activities that are of interest to you
  • Join a college readiness or mentorship program


10th Grade

  • Continue to take challenging core classes
  • Meet with your school counselor to discuss colleges and requirements
  • Register to take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) Test in October to give you practice
  • Visit local colleges and universities with family and friends
  • Attend a college fairs
  • Maintain active membership in extra-curricular activities and seek opportunities for leadership
  • Maintain an above average GPA from now until you graduate
    • (*Note: Most universities calculate admissible GPA based on grades from 10th -11th, incl. summer session following completion of 11th grade)
  • Continue participation in college readiness programs such as EAOP, MESA, TALENT SEARCH, TRIO, IAM program, One Voice, etc.
  • Plan to use your free time wisely -- work, volunteer or consider taking community college classes
