Riordan Scholars Program

Requirements:  The Riordan Scholars Program targets incoming 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are college-bound and interested in developing the necessary leadership skills to succeed in college and business.

Due Date:  Online applications for the 2015 - 2016 academic year will become available in January! 

The deadline to submit all application materials is Friday, May 15th, 2015. 

The 2015 - 2016 Riordan Scholars Program is scheduled to begin in September (2015) and end in May (2016). 

Tentative program dates are listed below:

*Session attendance is mandatory.  All dates are subject to change with prior notice being forwarded.  

What is The RIordan Scholars Program?

The Riordan Scholars Program targets incoming 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are college-bound and interested in developing the necessary leadership skills to succeed in college and business. The comprehensive program includes:  

  • Eight Saturday sessions
  • Human resources and organizational behavior case study overviews led by UCLA Anderson faculty
  • Team-based exploration of the stock market
  • A real estate competition focusing on communities in Los Angeles
  • Guest speakers from top industry leaders
  • SAT preparatory workshops for 10th and 11th grade Scholars
  • Personal mentors
  • Professional development seminars that include résumé writing, interviewing techniques and networking workshops

*ALL of the above is provided on a tuition FREE basis to Riordan Scholars!!!

 1. Grade Level

  • Be in the 9th grade at time of application

2.  Math skills

  • Have strong mathematics skills appropriate for your grade level, as determined by the SMASH math assessment (which is administered to all SMASH applicants in March).

3.  Attend a public high school, or attend a private high school via scholarship.

What is SMASH? ¿Qué es SMASH?

SMASH is...

  • A three-year program that includes a 5-week summer math and science enrichment program and year-round academic support.
  • For low-income high school students of color under-represented in STEM.
  • Focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
  • Successful in preparing scholars for college and achievement in higher education.
  • Free of cost.

SMASH scholars spend five weeks each summer at a SMASH site on a college campusimmersed in rigorous STEM classes. SMASH Scholars live on campus for five weeks each summer (after their 9th, 10th and 11th grade years) with other high potential Black, Latino/a, Native American, Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander high school students.

SMASH scholars also receive year-round academic support including access to SAT prep online materials, college counseling, financial aid workshops and other activities to ensure continued academic success. SMASH is expanding to additional college campuses nationwide in the future.

Yale Global Scholars Programs


Requirements:  Open to Sophomores and Juniors!

An official Yale University program, participants in the Yale Young Global Scholars Program for Outstanding High School Students can expect an amazing summer experience studying in beautiful campus lecture halls and classrooms, living in Yale’s historic residential colleges, eating in award-winning dining halls, meeting a talented community of fellow students, engaging with world-renowned professors, and interacting with extraordinary visiting practitioners.

United Way Student Leadership Program


Requirements:  Open to all grade levels!

2015 United Way Student Leadership Program is a unique opportunity to develop skills and

network with other student leaders from across LA. As a United Way Student Leader, you will

join a group of talented, energetic and diverse peers on college tours, meeting with key

business & community leaders and engage in professional development workshops.


After completing this program you will:


• Have summer internship opportunity

• Improve on presentation skills

• Develop effective networking skills

• Contribute to a student lead movement to end poverty in LA
