Message from Magnet Assistant Principal Karen McCarthy

Karen McCarthy (Assistant Principle)

I am new to the College Preparatory Magnet program this year, but not new to Manual Arts High School. I've worked here for the past 3 years in the capacity of Instructional Specialist and Math Coach for the Math department. Prior to working at Manual Arts High School, I was a Math Coach at Bernstein High School and Fairfax High School, as well as a full time Math teacher at the Cortines Visual and Performing Arts School for 3 years and Fairfax High School for about 15 years. I've also taught at the community college level (LA Pierce College) for the past 18 years.

I'm originally from a little town on the east coast called Poughkeepsie, New York. When I was a Junior in high school I decided I wanted to be a math teacher and I pursued a Bachelor's in Math at The King's College in Briarcliff Manor, NY as well as a Master's in Math at SUNY New Paltz in order to make my dream come true. Although I worked for a few years in the aerospace industry at TRW in Redondo Beach, I returned to education because I've always felt passionate about teaching and working with high school students.

I am excited to serve the students, staff, parents, and community in the capacity of Assistant Principal of the College Prep Magnet school and I look forward to a productive and successful year!

Ms. Karen McCarthy
